“MAI,” the newest romantic drama from Tran Thanh, the most successful director in Vietnamese box office history, makes a grand entrance onto the global stage and is expected to achieve the highest ever North American and international box office opening for a Vietnamese film.
“MAI” features the popular Vietnamese actress Phuong Anh Dao and actor Tuan Trong, as well as Vietnamese-American Hollywood actress Hong Dao, who is recognized for her performance in Ali Wong’s award-winning series BEEF.
On March 22nd, the movie was simultaneously released in nearly 200 theaters in 9 countries across North America and Europe by distributor 3388 Films. This marks the largest same-day theatrical release for a Vietnamese film in these continents. The film is currently being shown in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.
MAI achieved an unprecedented half a million in advance international sales before its opening weekend, performing exceptionally well in almost all of the top 20 national DMAs, such as Los Angeles/Orange County, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco/San Jose, and Seattle.
MAI cemented its status as the top-grossing movie in Vietnam with 520 billion VND ($21M) in ticket sales, making director Tran Thanh the first to achieve this impressive feat. His films now hold the top three spots in terms of highest box office earnings in Vietnam. It is a testament to his remarkable commercial success and strong connection with the audience.
Tran Thanh co-directed the 2021 film Bố Già (Dad, I’m Sorry), which was the first Vietnam-produced film to surpass $1M at the U.S. box office. He then made his solo directing debut in 2023 with Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man), which earned 475 billion VND ($19M) at the domestic box office, following the success of Bố Già which gathered 427 billion VND ($17M). His latest film, MAI, is his third consecutive box office hit.
