South Korean tax authorities collect 1 billion won (more than 19 billion) for 7 content creators on YouTube.
After months of investigation by the Korean National Tax Agency, Kim Chung Woo, a lawmaker of the Democratic Party, said the YouTube content creators earned a total of 4.5 billion won. but do not report income to the tax authorities.
This is the first time that YouTube content creators have been publicized their earnings and tax evasion in Korea. Tax authorities are having difficulty in accurately investigating these people ‘incomes.
In a report submitted to Congress, the tax agency said it will collect and use data based on transactions of new types of businesses, including YouTuber, to find tax evaders.
Currently, Korea only access information about remittances from USD 10,000 / year, creating a big hole for tax evasion. Content makers can completely ask for money from another person.
Some people called for lowering the ceiling to prevent tax evasion, but the Ministry of Finance is still cautious about this issue.
