by Ricky Head · December 16, 2018

Entire nation is going to have a sleepless night as Vietnam won the AFF cup after an excellent return game against Malaysia.
Vietnam’s national football team brought home the ASEAN Football Federation championship Saturday night, after 10 years.
They won the cup in My Dinh in 2008 and the anxiety has been high ahead of the second leg final match Saturday night, when more than 40,000 fans from Vietnam and Malaysia filled the stadium. Vietnam gained the upper hand after drawing Malaysia 2-2 in the away match on December 11 and only needed a 1-1 or goalless draw to claim the title.
My Dinh burst in screams after Nguyen Anh Duc scored from a volley inside the box in the sixth minute. Vietnam played strong defense for the rest of the game and maintained the score. Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam had an excellent performance, saving many dangerous shots.
Team won the cup plus $300,000 prize from AFF.
Midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai, who played full matches the entire tournament, was named its Most Valuable Player and received a $10,000 prize.

In Nha Trang, thousands of people gathered at the square and Tran Phu Street to celebrate. The street froze as more and more people flock into this area. The fans screamed out head coach and players’ names in joy.

Hanoi’s Hang Bai Street is filled with red fans. It was a fitting end to some great football produced by the men’s team over more than a month since the tournament got underway.

Vietnam will get another sleepless night as citizens take to the streets to celebrate the win.
